Even if you were born and rai\u00adsed in Gothen\u00adburg and have lived here all your life, you stand a&nbsp;good chan\u00adce of disco\u00adve\u00adring new parts of the&nbsp;city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Hisingsparken and Lundby gamla kyrkby<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The day begins with a&nbsp;short bus ride from Par\u00adtil\u00adle Home Guard hall to Tuve. From the\u00adre you walk through Hisingspar\u00adken \u2013 Gothen\u00adbur\u00adg\u2019s lar\u00adgest park \u2013 and on through Tole\u00adred towards Eke\u00adtr\u00e4\u00adga\u00adtan and then down to Lindholmen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On the way you pass through a&nbsp;pictu\u00adres\u00adque frag\u00adment of what was once Lund\u00adby gam\u00adla kyrk\u00adby. The\u00adre you find Lund\u00adby Old Church, which Queen Mar\u00adga\u00adret, ruler of Swe\u00adden, Nor\u00adway and Den\u00admark, often visi\u00adted during her stays at San\u00adne\u00adg\u00e5r\u00adden, a&nbsp;royal esta\u00adte alre\u00ada\u00addy men\u00adtio\u00adned in the Erik Chro\u00adnic\u00adle. A&nbsp;litt\u00adle furt\u00adher on you pass Lund\u00adby New Church, built in 1996 to repla\u00adce the Lund\u00adby New Church built in 1886 and burnt down in 1993. (Roughly as con\u00adfu\u00adsing as the new Gam\u00adla Ullevi.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Lindholmen and Slottsberget<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On Lind\u00adhol\u00admen you pass the clas\u00adsic har\u00adbour pub Port Art\u00adhur and walk into the old shipy\u00adard-wor\u00adkers\u2019 quar\u00adters on Lind\u00adhol\u00admen on your way up to Slottsberget.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Slotts\u00adber\u00adget takes its name from Lind\u00adhol\u00admen Cast\u00adle, which stood here and from which King Mag\u00adnus Eriks\u00adson ruled Swe\u00adden and Nor\u00adway in the 14th cen\u00adtu\u00adry. He gave the cast\u00adle as a&nbsp;mor\u00adning gift to the Bel\u00adgi\u00adan prin\u00adcess Blan\u00adche of Namur, bet\u00adter known as Queen Blan\u00adche. Today the cast\u00adle\u2019s sto\u00adnes sur\u00advi\u00adve in the founda\u00adtions of cot\u00adta\u00adges built by shipy\u00adard wor\u00adkers in the 19th cen\u00adtu\u00adry. The buil\u00addings on Slotts\u00adber\u00adget look like a&nbsp;Bohus\u00adl\u00e4n fishing vil\u00adlage in the midd\u00adle of the&nbsp;city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Eriksberg<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From Slotts\u00adber\u00adget you make your way down to the bridge over San\u00adne\u00adg\u00e5rds\u00adham\u00adnen to Eriks\u00adberg. Once across, follow the foot\u00adpath up onto S\u00f6r\u00adhalls\u00adber\u00adget. Take a&nbsp;short detour to the sout\u00adhern edge of the hill if you can. From the\u00adre you have a&nbsp;swee\u00adping view over G\u00f6ta \u00e4lv through Gothen\u00adburg. On the way you also pass an M39 sentry post, a&nbsp;remin\u00adder of the Second World&nbsp;War.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Walk along Eriks\u00adbergs\u00adka\u00adjen and enjoy the bust\u00adle. By the quay you find the East Indi\u00ada\u00adman G\u00f6t\u00adhe\u00adborg, a&nbsp;repli\u00adca of the East Indi\u00ada\u00adman that ran aground and sank at the entran\u00adce to Gothen\u00adbur\u00adg\u2019s har\u00adbour in 1745.&nbsp;A&nbsp;litt\u00adle furt\u00adher on you pass the gan\u00adtry cra\u00adne, a&nbsp;remin\u00adder that Eriks\u00adberg was a&nbsp;shipy\u00adard not so very long&nbsp;ago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Car\u00adry on up to the Eriks\u00adberg pla\u00adteau and then into the gree\u00adne\u00adry by the nort\u00adhern abut\u00adment of \u00c4lvs\u00adborgs\u00adbron. You are now wal\u00adking on histo\u00adric ground.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Karl IX\u2019s Gothenburg<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When today\u2019s Gothen\u00adburg was foun\u00added in 1621 by Gus\u00adtav II Adolf, it was the third attempt to establish a&nbsp;Swe\u00addish town at the mouth of G\u00f6ta \u00e4lv. As ear\u00adly as 1473, the regent Sten Stu\u00adre the Elder foun\u00added the town of Nya L\u00f6d\u00f6\u00adse. The remains of pro\u00adto-Gothen\u00adburg make up today\u2019s Gam\u00adlesta\u00adden district. The next attempt came in 1603, when Karl IX com\u00admis\u00adsio\u00adned the Dutch\u00adman Cor\u00adne\u00adli\u00adus Cor\u00adne\u00adli\u00adus\u00adson to build a&nbsp;town on the very spot whe\u00adre you are now wal\u00adking. But the town was short-lived \u2013 the Danes burnt it down in 1611. All that remains is the church ruin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Time for a&nbsp;litt\u00adle rest. Pay by&nbsp;card.<\/p>\n<summary>Nea\u00adrest toilet<\/summary><\/details>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Sj\u00f6bergen and Nya Varvet<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The next leg takes you over \u00c4lvs\u00adborgs\u00adbron and into the Sj\u00f6\u00adber\u00adgen allot\u00adment area. Whe\u00adre the path forks, follow the trails through the woods down towards Nya Var\u00advet. The\u00adre are many trails and it is easy to take the wrong one. So pay atten\u00adtion and keep an eye on the&nbsp;map.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nya Var\u00advet \u2013 lite\u00adral\u00adly \u2019New Shipy\u00adard\u2019 \u2013 was indeed new in the ear\u00adly 18th cen\u00adtu\u00adry, when it was laid out as a&nbsp;naval har\u00adbour. Today 80 com\u00adpa\u00adni\u00ades, insti\u00adtu\u00adtions and trai\u00adning units have their ope\u00adra\u00adtions&nbsp;here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Car\u00adry on east\u00adwards along the sout\u00adhern bank of the river. When you see a&nbsp;red-pain\u00adted erra\u00adtic boul\u00adder by the water, you have reached one of Gothen\u00adbur\u00adg\u2019s best-known land\u00admarks \u2013 R\u00f6da Sten (the \u2019Red Sto\u00adne\u2019). Histo\u00adri\u00adcal\u00adly the sto\u00adne ser\u00adved as a&nbsp;bor\u00adder mar\u00adker between Swe\u00adden and Den\u00admark, pos\u00adsib\u00adly as ear\u00adly as the 11th century.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Klippan<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Keep going under \u00c4lvs\u00adborgs\u00adbron. You have now reached Klip\u00adpan \u2013 one of Gothen\u00adbur\u00adg\u2019s oldest quarters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Klip\u00adpan has the feel of an old har\u00adbour town, with sur\u00adviving buil\u00addings from the 18th and 19th cen\u00adtu\u00adri\u00ades such as the sugar refi\u00adne\u00adry and the por\u00adter brewe\u00adry built up in the 1850s by David Car\u00adne\u00adgie. The\u00adre are old wor\u00adkers\u2019 dwel\u00adlings, schools, chur\u00adches, smit\u00adhi\u00ades, ware\u00adhouses and Saint Bir\u00adgit\u00adta\u2019s Cha\u00adpel in Eng\u00adlish Got\u00adhic Revi\u00adval sty\u00adle. Seve\u00adral tall ships and schoo\u00adners lie moo\u00adred at Klip\u00adpan\u2019s&nbsp;quays.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As you cross A&nbsp;R Lorents Gata, you catch a&nbsp;glimp\u00adse of the ruins of \u00c4lvs\u00adborg Cast\u00adle \u2013 now cal\u00adled Gam\u00adla \u00c4lvs\u00adborg \u2013 up on the hill between the houses. \u00c4lvs\u00adborg Cast\u00adle was a&nbsp;sig\u00adni\u00adfi\u00adcant for\u00adti\u00adfi\u00adca\u00adtion dating from the 14th cen\u00adtu\u00adry. When con\u00adstruc\u00adtion of Nya \u00c4lvs\u00adborg fort\u00adress began in the har\u00adbour entran\u00adce in 1653, \u00c4lvs\u00adborg Cast\u00adle lost its stra\u00adte\u00adgic impor\u00adtan\u00adce and was blown up between 1660 and 1673. If it is open, it is a&nbsp;good pla\u00adce to cool down befo\u00adre you car\u00adry on dee\u00adper into Majorna.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When you reach Mari\u00ada\u00adga\u00adtan, you have arri\u00adved in Kungs\u00adla\u00addu\u00adg\u00e5rd. The name comes from the fact that the area sup\u00adpli\u00aded \u00c4lvs\u00adborg Cast\u00adle with food. After \u00c4lvs\u00adborg Cast\u00adle was aban\u00addo\u00adned in the mid-17th cen\u00adtu\u00adry, the area ser\u00adved as resi\u00addence and remu\u00adne\u00adra\u00adtion for the county gover\u00adnor of \u00c4lvs\u00adborg County.
